Harmony Day

Harmony Day Everyone belongs

Southwell Primary School celebrated Harmony Day, the “International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination” in style this year with all nationalities in the school coming together to celebrate Southwell’s cultural diversity. Organised by families, Southwell Primary community enjoyed a lunch of foods from around the world, with a focus on the nationalities represented at Southwell. The students experienced a variety of cuisines with new flavours, smells and textures.  The parents sent students to school in their traditional dress. Many of Southwell’s students come from warm climates so luckily the weather accommodated them with a pleasant day.

Ms. Melville, Southwell’s principal said “Southwell students enjoyed celebrating their achievements in fighting racism and their positive messages of welcome. It is essential that we take Harmony day to acknowledge that racism exists in Australia, and students with guidance from the community consider how we can address it.”

Southwell’s students demonstrated how this annual day can be used to recognise the many positive aspects of living in a multicultural society.
